The Brutalism of the Cantabrian Museum embraces the purity of Boost Natural

Cantabria embodies a fascinating link with the Italian spirit, expressed through the Brutalist architecture of the Cantabrian Museum, which harmonises with the organic appeal of Boost Natural. This fusion creates a dialogue between the austerity of concrete and the softness of Atlas Concorde ceramic surfaces, enhancing the strength of Brutalism and the purity of materials in an elegant and surprising balance.

Overlooking the picturesque bay of Santander in northern Spain, the Cantabrian Maritime Museum stands as a majestic concrete structure, part of an architectural complex that also includes the Oceanographic Centre. Designed by architects Vicente Roig Forner and Ángel Hernández Morales between 1975 and 1978, this building represents a harmonious fusion of functionality and contemporary design.

Expanded for the first time in 2003, the museum recently completed a further update with the inauguration of an exclusive restaurant and a large terrace. Here, porcelain stoneware surfaces by Atlas Concorde offer visitors a visual experience that perfectly complements the natural beauty of the bay.

For the flooring of the new space, the multi-award winning Madrid-based studio Zooco, recent winner of the Architecture Masterprize 2023 in the category ‘Small Firm of Multidisciplinary Interior Design’, selected Atlas Concorde surfaces. The project saw the use of porcelain stoneware from the Boost Natural collection in the Ecru shade, inspired by the working of raw earth. This choice gives the floor a tactile and enveloping aspect, creating a suggestive contrast with the brutalism of the surrounding concrete and giving the environment a touch of warm elegance.

The design of the new space returns to the concept conceived by Forner and Morales, rediscovering the essence of the building with its contemporary soul, through the recovery and enhancement of the structure's original concrete paraboloids. The encounter between the solidity of concrete and the naturalness of the Boost Natural collection generates a fascinating dialogue between architectural austerity and the organic nature of the materials. In this space, brutalism and purity find a harmonious balance, merging to create an environment that enhances both structure and material.

Artistic elements, of great visual impact, embellished by false wooden ceilings of triangular shape and by the natural light of large windows that open the view to the landscape of the bay of Santander, almost annulling the boundary between inside and outside.

A contemporary renovation and enhancement project, in which Atlas Concorde brings a natural, yet refined touch to Boost Natural, capable of recreating strong tactile and visual impressions.
